My family and I started living in the Pergola District in November 2019. The ‘Pergolenviertel’ is located in Hamburg, Germany and about 1400 residential flats will be part to the district. This photo blog is about the experience of being one of the first residents in a new community built from scratch.

The Pergola District covers an area of 27 hectares to the East of one of Hamburgs commercial districts and a large park. Building works began in early 2016, mainly on allotment sites (always designated residential building land belonging to the City of Hamburg). 150 of the 330 allotment will still exist when building works are completed. Buildings are 3-8 stories high and will cover 8 hectares of the district; about 7 hectares will be allocated to playgrounds, parkland etc.

The Pergola District has its own sustainable mobility concept (Mobilport, German only), funded by the German central government as part to climate protection activities. Also available in German is the stakeholder forum of the Pergola district, with plenty of information on the individual planning thinking and implementation.

This blog is solely about the user perspective of the creation of the Pergola District over time - for detailed planning information and such things please use the official public information.
